Of forty three years of my life, I have been a photographer for the last 19 years. Born, raised and educated in Karachi, Pakistan, I got into photography in 1988. Being self taught, I learnt mostly from books, magazines and libraries found locally or obtained through friends and relatives from abroad. In those early 90's, I came across an amazing American magazine, Camera & Darkroom (previously called Darkroom Photography), which not only encouraged me to have my own little darkroom one day, but it was my first exposure to Alt-Process images. This left me wondering how in the world I was going to explore these processes in Pakistan. Allah be praised, for I slowly learned photography, moving on to B/W possessing and printing. Now after all these years - with the help of notes saved from magazines, tech. books and the internet - I am able to print Alt images. Sadly, the magazine stopped publication in Sept. 1995. On the whole, life has been wonderful and photography has been a complete high. “Hues Within ” was my third solo exhibition, a culmination of nearly three years of work. Time has flown since then, at present a long list of plans keeps brewing to travel further in search of fresh images, and plus to explore and experiment with additional techniques and processes. Venturing into Digital Art seemed natural after the traditional old Alt- Processes. In the year 2005 "Ethereal Ether Echoes" my fourth solo happened after a five years of work. This exhibition was a total success on all levels "Alhumduillah" Fine Art Photography is finally here to stay in Pakistan. It’s been eleven years now since I started to teach at the Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture, So much has changed since my earlier years here. The key new addition being given the chance to teach and work with the fine art students, which is in the school’s history a first time ever at a minor level.... hmmmm so! Busy as ever while sometimes when time permits freelancing as a commercial photographer too. Finally, an affirmation, I love my faith, my country, and sometimes the crazy people. Can't believe you actually had the patience to read till the end. Ahem! Thank you for the web-ified visit. |
