The use of the term art medium is,
to say the least, misleading,
for it is the artist that creates a work of art
not the medium. It is the artist in photography
that gives form to content by a distillation of ideas,
thought, experience, insight and understanding.

~ Edward Steichen

IVS Communication Design Department & Photography Courses ::.

Ideas, creativity, visual skills, problem solving – the new communication culture will be led by designers of agility and intelligence with the expertise to respond to the constantly evolving needs. The student, in addition to a thorough grounding in design, is also encouraged to undertake a study in cultural and historical context as well as social and ethical factors that influence design decisions. The department aims to create an atmosphere in which students challenge and redefine their individual subject aims. The course aims to develop mature, creative and analytical work through exploration of ideas and theory classes that provide a social context for professional practice.

The potential of Communication design covers areas ranging from social Communication to Corporate Communication. During the three years in the department, the students take on a variety of design projects, which cover some of the multi-dimensional aspects of the field. The areas covered include Graphic Design, Typography, Advertising Design, computer graphics, Photography, Illustration and web design, corporate identity and information systems like signage. The curriculum maintains a fine balance between theory and practice. Working knowledge in the area of moving image production through a comprehension of animation and film and video are also an important part of the curriculum.

Photography courses began at the IVS in the year 1997 and was introduced as a minor subject to the CD students in the year 2000. Photography provides a communication design student with the general principles of photography relevant to the field and applicable to designers. The basic concepts and terminology, traditional and digital photography, composition, colour methods and equipment are covered. Students learn to place and optimize captured images for print projects. In the 5th semester students may choose photography as their minor which they study till their 7th Semester for 5 weeks each time.
