Photography is both extremely
difficult and extremely easy! To set a lens opening, to press a button these are technical operations and can be learned. But to capture a
mood or inner spirit demands a creative insight and a searching eye.

The Photo-Essays :: A Sense of Place & Environmental Portraits ::.
Course Objectives ::.
::.This course introduces color materials to the students for the
first time (color negatives/slides). Black-and-white skills learned
in the
3rd Semester are enhanced and reinforced. The class is designed to
explore the inherent qualities of both color and black-and-white
photographic
processes so that students learn to make informed decisions in their
choice of materials.
::. Develop
keener observation skills.
::. Cultivate
a higher level of compositional (design) skill.
::. Achieve
beyond the basic knowledge of the use and function of the camera, lenses,
filters, light, exposure and equivalencies, black and white (and
some color) film.
::. Gain
a deeper appreciation for the power of photographic statement, including
functional and aesthetic purposes.
Assignment :: Imagery ::.
::. Two
photo essays, each consisting of 5 images each,or one essay with ten images.
::. At
least one must be in color; the other can be the identical, or in black
and white. You decide which medium suits which theme best.
::. Both
should capture a 'sense of place'; the First series of images must
place importance on the people (through environmental portraiture),
and
the other, on the environment itself (people may be present, but the
photograph must not emphasize their presence).
::. Take
observations notes on the experience; what you see and feel, information
and anecdotes; these will add depth to your legends.
Presentation ::.
::. The
photo essays can be presented like a hand-written travelogue, or have
the feel of a National Geographic Magazine article.
::. Each
essay must have an introduction (minimum 30 words).
::. A
brief legend must accompany each photograph.
::. The
photograph size must be between 6"x8" and 8"x10".
::. The
images must be presented in a 10"x12" format.
::. Only
one image per page (i.e. two per leaf).
::. There
must be consistency in the presentation of each series (feel, layout,
medium, size etc.); variations between the two series are permitted.
